Community policing, or community-oriented policing, is a strategy of policing that focuses on police building ties and working closely with members of the communities.

Neighborhood Watch: Is Your Neighborhood Ready to Resist Crime?

The prevention of crime, particularly crime involving residential neighborhoods, is a responsibility that must be shared equally by law enforcement and private citizens. The fact is the impact on crime prevention by law enforcement alone is minimal when compared with the power of private citizens working with law enforcement and with each other.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH is based on this concept of cooperation, and nationwide statistics prove that it works. When citizens take positive steps to secure their own property and neighbors learn how to report suspicious activity around their homes, burglary and related offenses decrease dramatically.

Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program that enlists the active participation of residents in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime, solve problems, and improve the quality of life in your area. In it you will get to know and work with your neighbors, and learn how to:

• Recognize and report crimes and suspicious activities.

• Protect yourself, your family, and your property.

• Protect your neighbor's family and property.

• Identify crime and disorder problems in your area and work with MPD personnel to solve them.

The Neighborhood watch officers are dedicated to helping each neighborhood defeat crime. Currently, there are over 160 active programs (Neighborhood Watch, Home Owners Association, and Apartment Watch) in the City of Montgomery. The Police Department would like to see all neighborhoods actively participate in a neighborhood watch. It is very simple to start a neighborhood watch and the dedicated officers will be more than helpful to assist you in starting one in your area. If you are interested in starting a neighborhood watch on your street or in your neighborhood contact Community Policing Office at 240-4800.

Business Watch: Protecting Your Business

The Certified Crime Prevention Business Program is built around four main elements which consist of written policies, training, security assessments and liaison with the Police Department. These four elements are broken down into certain mandatory and optional requirements that must be fulfilled by the business seeking certification within the program. The purpose of the program is to prevent participating businesses from being victimized. This is accomplished by raising awareness and knowledge through written policies and training, implementing recommended security applications, and by increased communication and cooperation between businesses themselves, and between the business community and the Police Department.

Business Watch Includes:

VIPS Program

Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) is a natural outgrowth of Community Oriented Policing that encourages citizen participation. Today it is common place for police departments to utilize volunteers within their service delivery systems. Numerous law enforcement agencies have developed programs to encourage assistance from community volunteers in the operation of their departments.

Vacation home checks are available to Montgomery residents. Notify the City of Montgomery 311 or 625-4636 and a volunteer will check your home while you are away.
