EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS OPERATOR
Selecting a position in emergency dispatching will provide you a very rewarding career. It will give you the opportunity to provide invaluable assistance to citizens in their time of need. You will also provide support to police officers and firefighters, to allow them to more effectively perform their jobs. Many career dispatchers believe this to be one of the more rewarding parts of the job.

As an Emergency Communications Operator you will have two major responsibilities. First, you will answer 911 calls from the public and collect the necessary information for the police department or fire department to properly respond. You will enter this information into a computer so that it may be dispatched to the appropriate units. Your second major area of responsibility will be dispatching police and fire department units. You will utilize a computer and two-way radio to notify units of calls. You will also receive and process requests from units via the two-way radio. Work in either of these two assignments can be very hectic and stressful due to the volume and nature of the calls. However, most operators feel a sense of accomplishment after handling a stressful or tense call.

Upon employment you will attend a one to two week orientation and then be assigned to a training officer who will provide on the job training. During your training program, you will also attend several specialized classes such as Emergency Dispatching and CPR.

After successful completion of your training period and six months probationary period, you will be promoted to an Emergency Communications Operator II.

After completion of your training program you will be assigned to your permanent shift. Once assigned to a permanent shift you generally remain there, unless you request a transfer to another shift. Requests for a change in shifts are made in writing and generally granted in the order in which they are received.

You will work five 8-hour shifts per week with two off days. The off days are assigned by seniority on the shift. You should understand, as a new employee with little seniority, you will most probably be assigned to work an evening or night shift and not have Saturday or Sunday off. Your two off days will be together, but during the week. Due to the very nature of our work, you will be required to work overtime from time to and work many holidays.
