Nearly 1,000 people lose their lives every year in the U.S. due to red light violators.

In an effort to prevent these devastating crashes that cause injuries and fatalities to both drivers and pedestrians, the City of Montgomery has implemented an automated traffic enforcement camera system at various intersections throughout this City.

Beginning April 1, 2008, traffic cameras will record images of vehicles running a red light. Violators will receive warning notices during the first 30 days of operation. Following this warning period, citizens running a red light at intersections will receive citations with an associated civil monetary penalty of $50. As additional camera enforcement systems are added throughout the City, the same process will be utilized.

These programs have been operating in the US for nearly 15 years and are proven to

• Reduce accidents and Injuries
• Allow Police to focus on other safety issues
• Improve traffic flow
• Save Lives!

How Does it Work?

When a vehicle runs the a red light, the camera systems captures three images of the violation:

1st Image – Provides a view of the vehicle before crossing the white stop line and provides a view of the traffic light that is red.

2nd Image - Clearly shows that the vehicle has continued through the intersection while the traffic light is red.

3rd Image – Shows an up-close image of the license plate of the violator’s vehicle.

City of Montgomery Police personnel review ALL citation images to verify violations.

The camera systems operate only when the traffic light is red – capturing images of actual violations.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Why is the City of Montgomery installing a red light system?

A: Red light camera enforcement is no longer an emerging technology but is a proven, well-established traffic safety tool that provides effective, continuous enforcement. A 2005 review of red light camera studies around the world concluded that cameras reduce red light violations by 40-50 percent and reduce injury crashes by 25-30 percent.

Q. Why did I get this citation?

A. A vehicle, registered or leased to you, was photographed by an automatic camera connected to a traffic signal, that is only active when the light is red (no yellow or green). Vehicles crossing the stop bar after the light turns red are detected automatically and two photographs are taken. Superimposed on each photograph is the date, time, location and time into red signal when the violation occurred..

Q. Is this notice a “Traffic Ticket?”

A. No. This notice is not considered a “moving violation”. It is merely a notice advising of the violation and potential for civil liability
