VEHICULAR SAFETY

Safe driving is required of all City employees. In order to ensure that safe driving habits are practiced, the Safety and Training Division conduct monthly safety meetings on the departmental level.

In 2006, a defensive driving course will be offered to City employees as a way of enhancing their driving skills. The Smith System Advanced Driving Safety System is the defensive driving training foundation that will be used. This defensive driving course will be implemented in the departments that have the greatest driving exposure. Our goal is to teach defensive driving skills to all City drivers as soon as possible. Additionally, any driver involved in a preventable accident will be enrolled in a remedial defensive driving course as soon as possible after preventability has been determined.

ACCIDENT REVIEW BOARD
The Citywide Accident Review Board meets monthly and it has the responsibility of determining preventability on any accident involving a City employee operating City-owned vehicles. All employees are given three weeks notice to appear before the Board. The employee may present witnesses or evidence at the Board meeting. The Board's findings are binding but they are subject to an appeal process. The preventability findings of the Board may affect the driving history of the individual employee. A progressive-discipline program is used in all cases where accidents are determined to have been preventable on the part of the City driver.
WORKER PERSONAL SAFETY
A safe working environment should be the concern of all City of Montgomery employees. This environment is being achieved through the combined efforts of employees, supervisors, managers and Department Directors. Any unsafe working condition must be reported by an employee to their immediate supervisor or to the Safety and Training Supervisor for investigation and correction.
ACCIDENT PREVENTION COMMITTEE
A City-wide Accident Prevention Committee meets on a regular basis and reviews employee on-the-job injuries with the goal of preventing similar accidents from happening. Prevention is attained through educating the worker or by correcting a known hazard.
CDL PREPARATION COURSE
The Safety Office is currently offering Commercial Drivers License Preparation Courses to employees on a monthly basis. These courses consist of (2) four-hour classes that assist the employee in preparing for the CDL written tests as well as the skills and road tests. All employees wishing to participate in the class must obtain the permission of their immediate supervisor.
