The Division of Fire Medics is proud to be the most active segment of Montgomery Fire/Rescue. We make every effort to afford the citizens of Montgomery the most advanced and well trained Emergency Medical Staff in the State of Alabama. By working and training closely with the other divisions we are able to provide our citizens rapid stabilization of injuries or illness regardless of the situation. We will continue to expand our training requirements and maintain our equipment so that the citizens of Montgomery will always have a state of the art EMS system.
About the Fire Medics
The paramedic program became a vital part of Montgomery in 1975. During this period two fire medic units were placed in service. The medic units provided with saving countless lives each year.
The fire medic division was started in 1975 and completed their first full year of operation in 1976. During this year they had 2 units operating and responded to 3,841 calls. On March 1, 1976 the fire medic division began carrying I.V. fluids and E.T. tubes, both of these instruments were seen as a great success at the time and they are still just as valuable today. In April 1976, the medics began to carry 12 pre-hospital emergency drugs and today that number has grown to 20.
On October 8, 1976, the Montgomery Fire Medics in conjunction with N. A. S. A., General Electric, and the University of Southern Mississippi participated in an experiment in which a real time EKG was sent to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, Mississippi from Montgomery, Alabama via a N. A. S. A. satellite orbiting 22,300 miles out in space above Ecuador.
Today, the medic division serves Montgomery with 6 rescue trucks and 1 shift commander answering almost 20,000 calls a year. The State of Alabama EMS instituted protocols in 1998. The simple 3 lead EKG monitors carried in 1976 have evolved into 12-lead diagnostic monitors that can fax a strip to a waiting cardiologist.
