SPECIAL OPERATIONS
MISSION STATEMENT

Being the newest asset of Montgomery Fire/Rescue the Division of Special Operations extends the capabilities of the Department to include specialized rescue and hazardous material containment functions. Through participation in classroom and hands on schools we continue to expand our knowledge base and experience to provide the citizens of Montgomery Haz-Mat and Heavy Rescue teams capable of dealing with the most complex of emergencies.

About Special Operations

The Special Operations Division originally started with one Hazardous Material team developed in 1978 located at 1304 Air Base Blvd Fire station number Four (4). Through city funding and the generosity from Homeland Security. The Special Operations Division extends the capabilities of the Montgomery Fire/Rescue to include two (2) Hazardous Material teams, one (1) Heavy Rescue team and a vast arsenal of specialized tools and equipment.

The Division is complimented with two types of specialized teams, two Hazardous Material teams and one Heavy Rescue team. Haz-Mat 60 is one responding to all hazardous incidents that may occur west of Perry Hill Rd.


The second Haz-mat unit is Haz-Mat 65 located at 441 Taylor Rd Fire Station number 15. This team was formed and put into operation in 2005. It has the responsibility of responding to all hazardous material incidents that may occur east of Perry Hill Rd.

The Hazardous Material teams consist of 60 (sixty) members, all are State of Alabama Certified Hazardous Materials Technicians trained to mitigate emergency situations from accidents involving tank trucks, rail cars, and responding to assist with clandestine labs etcs. Several team members are certified in specialty areas of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and Chemistry of Hazardous Materials.


The Heavy Rescue Team was formed in 2003, located at 4110 Camichael Rd. Fire Station 3. The team consists of Twenty (20) highly motivated members to respond to technical and non-technical rescue situations such as; Vehicle Extrication, High Angle Rope Rescue, Confined Space Rescue, Trench Rescue, Structure Collapse and Surface Water Rescue. In 2005 the city of Montgomery received a state of the art Heavy Rescue Apparatus through the generosity of Homeland Security Grant Money.


The Special Operations teams have the responsibility and duty to mitigate hazardous materials and rescue incidents within the city limits of Montgomery; they have also been assigned the duties of the Regional Response Teams for the Southeast. The teams are on duty and ready to respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They are also responsible for maintaining and operations of their perspective stations and units for normal day to day fire suppressions and medical emergency calls.
