The Training and Recruiting Bureau is responsible for the recruiting, hiring and training of all Montgomery Police Officers. In addition, the division is responsible for the operation of the Alabama Advanced Criminal Justice Academy which trains officers from other jurisdictions. For more information on employment opportunities with the Montgomery Police Department, please see our recruiting page.
The Training Bureau administrative offices are located at 740 Mildred Street. The Commander, the Administrative Assistant, the Division Secretary, and five instructors staff this location. A regional Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) academy - the Alabama Advanced Criminal Justice Academy - is located here and is responsible for training other state and local agency recruits in the APOSTC required 480-hour basic course.
The Bureau also operates a Firing Range and Training Facility at 5880 Old Hayneville Road, (334) 241-2703, The Assistant Division Commander, the Rangemaster, and a secretary staff this location. All MPD recruits are trained at this facility in a 560 plus hour course exceeding the minimum standards established by APOSTC. This location houses a 20-position handgun range and a tactical range that includes a rifle range, combat courses, and an explosive disposal and training bunker. All firearms instruction and qualification, officer survival courses, and major seminars are held at this facility.
The Training Bureau also provides in-service training for MPD and many other agencies. Several classes are scheduled monthly to allow officers to meet or exceed the required 12 hours of APOSTC continuing education. Most in-service classes are held at the Old Hayneville Road location.
