SPECIAL WEAPONS AND TACTICAL TEAM
|
Tactical Operations consists of the Special Weapons and Tactical Team (SWAT), Hostage Negotiation Team, and Bomb Squad.

SPECIAL WEAPONS AND TACTICAL TEAM
|
The SWAT Team is responsible for serving high- risk arrest and search warrants, high-profile street crime interdiction details, specialized surveillance details, and barricaded subject/hostage situations. Members work in conjunction with other units within the Tactical Operations Unit securing scenes, maintaining order, protecting other officers as well as the public, and providing necessary response to situations which mandate use of their expert level of enforcement.
The Montgomery Police Department's Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T) Team is a full-time S.W.A.T Team consisting of highly motivated officers from the rank of Police Officer to Police Lieutenant. The S.W.A.T Team responds to all situations requiring a response above the training traditionally given to Police Officers. The S.W.A.T Team consists of highly trained operators equipped with an enhanced arsenal of weapons, less-than-lethal devices, and specialized equipment.
The S.W.A.T Team handles situations such as high risk search and arrest warrants, armed barricaded suspects, hostage situations, and VIP protection. The S.W.A.T Team's primary daily mission is training in order to prepare for situations requiring their level of expertise.
The S.W.A.T Team also handles, or assists other divisions with high profile crime interdiction details, street-level narcotics enforcement, specialized surveillance details, works in conjunction with other Tactical Operations Units securing dangerous scenes, maintaining order, and protecting the public.
The S.W.A.T Team operators attend various in-house training schools, along with schools conducted by outside agencies, and expert instructors that are acknowledged experts in their specialization. Operators have attended Basic and Advanced S.W.A.T Schools, F.B.I Firearms Instructor School, Submachine Gun Instructor School, Chemical Munitions School, Rappelling Schools, Tactical Explosive Entry School, and Israeli Advanced Counter-Terrorism S.W.A.T. School. Several operators are trained as Snipers and Counter-Snipers, and have attended various Sniper and Long Rifle Marksmanship Schools.
The Montgomery Police Department's S.W.A.T Team also works in conjunction with the United States Department of Homeland Security and is trained and prepared to assist with any threat to Homeland Security in the City of Montgomery or surrounding areas.

HOSTAGE NEGOTIATION TEAM

The Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT) responds to incidents involving suicidal, armed/barricaded, and hostage situation calls. The HNT is responsible for establishing communication links with suspects as well as gathering background information on and debriefing of witnesses. The team is committed to the goal of defusing and preventing hostile situations from becoming worse, making every attempt to ensure a peaceful resolution through communication. Its members work in coordination with members of the SWAT unit, under command of the Division Commander and the Assistant. All HNT members are voluntary, on call, officers who have regular duty assignments within the department as a whole.

BOMB SQUAD

The Bomb Squad consists of several experienced officers, all of which have attended the F.B.I. Hazardous Devices School at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville , AL . The squad also has one Detection K-9 which is handled by a certified bomb technician. Services provided by the squad include investigating suspicious packages, rendering explosive devices safe, performing bomb "sweeps" and security for dignitaries, and providing bomb threat awareness/safety programs.
