The City Engineering Department oversees the design and construction of special projects, subdivisions, and commercial developments, as well as the repairing of existing structures and the repaving of existing streets.

Services offered by the Engineering Department are divided among three sections: Pre-Construction Services, Construction Services, and Environmental Services.

PRE-CONSTRUCTION SERVICES

In the Pre-Construction phase of projects the City Engineer holds consultations with design engineers to work out potential problems, coordinates with Federal, State and other Local agencies to determine that projects meet regulation requirements, and the contract/bidding/award process takes place. Pre-construction services include: Subdivision Plan Review , a wide variety of Commercial Development Plan Review ; extensive Survey Services ; in-house Design and Drafting ; complete Property and Plat Research ; and Flood Mitigation and Determination .


CONSTRUCTION SERVICES

Regular inspections are made in order to ensure that regulations are being followed and requirements are being met by project contractors. Construction services include: Construction Activity and Coordination ; and routine Bridge Inspection ; and Street Construction Inspection .

ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES

Environmental services include investigations at project construction sites and industries to determine air and water quality and enforce Federal, State, and Local environment protection regulations.The City Engineering Department's environmental mission is to assess and improve the safety of the community's natural resources through the use of education programs and investigative methods. The Environmental Division conducts site investigations including checking surface level and underground methane emissions at the North Montgomery Sanitary Landfill, groundwater around the landfill, sampling stormwater throughout the City, and sampling water in problem locations.

The Environmental Division works with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, and Clean Water Partnerships enforcing compliance throughout the City. The Environmental Division also handles citizen complaints as they pertain to illicit discharges and illegal dumping.

The coordination of all these Engineering services is vital to maintaining project contract plans for schedule and budget.
