All charrette events will be held at New Life Baptist Church at 1943 Rosa L. Parks Avenue.

The City of Montgomery will hold the West Fairview Avenue Charrette on February 1-5, 2010 at New Life Baptist Church. The event will focus on the future redevelopment of commercial properties on West Fairview Avenue from I-65 to Court Street as part of the West Montgomery Initiative.

Dover, Kohl & Partners, the urban design firm which created the Montgomery Downtown Master Plan, will lead the effort in partnership with the Montgomery Planning & Development Department. Urban Advisors, Ltd. will provide economic analysis to assist the City of Montgomery in preparation for future economic development activities for the area, including recommendations for a tax increment financing district’s boundaries. The charrette provides for a multiple-day, collaborative team design process, where stakeholders’ input is ongoing and key to the event’s success. The end product will be the creation of a realistic plan of action to bring positive change to the community through urban design solutions.

On February 1, the Kick-off Presentation & Hands-on Design Session will mark the official start of the West Fairview Avenue Charrette. The design team will provide an overview of best practices in urban planning and invite participants to work in small groups with individual designers to share their ideas and concerns for the future of West Fairview Avenue.

Throughout the week members of the community are encouraged to visit the ongoing design studio in the lobby of New Life Baptist Church. The design team will be available to meet with visitors, answer questions and further refine ideas. The final event, the Charrette Closing Presentation, will occur on February 5, where the design team will present the results of the week’s work to the community.
