Red Light Cameras

Nearly 1,000 people lose their lives every year in the U.S. due to red light violators.

Fairview Red Light Camera 2In an effort to prevent these devastating crashes that cause injuries and fatalities to both drivers and pedestrians, the City of Montgomery has implemented an automated traffic enforcement camera system at various intersections throughout this City.

Beginning April 1, 2008, traffic cameras will record images of vehicles running a red light. Drivers photographed running red lights will receive $60 citation. As additional camera enforcement systems are added throughout the City, the same process will be utilized.

These programs have been operating in the US for nearly 15 years and are proven to reduce accidents and injuries, allow police to focus on other safety issues, improve traffic flow and save lives!

How Does it Work?

When a vehicle runs the a red light, the camera systems captures three images of the violation:

  • 1st Image – Provides a view of the vehicle before crossing the white stop line and provides a view of the traffic light that is red.
  • 2nd Image - Clearly shows that the vehicle has continued through the intersection while the traffic light is red.
  • 3rd Image – Shows an up-close image of the license plate of the violator’s vehicle.

City of Montgomery Police personnel review ALL citation images to verify violations.

The camera systems operate only when the traffic light is red– capturing images of actual violations.
