The City of Montgomery is pleased to announce that Mr. Kelvin Miller, longtime employee of First Transit, Inc., has been hired as the next General Manager of the City of Montgomery’s - Montgomery Area Transit System (MATS).
The previous General Manager, Mr. Tim Omick has been re-assigned by First Transit Executives to Sun Metro Transit in El Paso, Texas. Mr. Omick has provided serious direction for MATS. He has guided the system from a dial-a-ride service to a fixed route transit system of 17 fixed bus routes that traverse the City of Montgomery currently, in addition to providing paratransit services for persons with disabilities. Since the rebirth of transit, ridership has grown 247%. A bus bench and shelter program was initiated as well as installation of over 600 bus stop signs. The old outdated transit fleet was replaced with brand new low floor transit buses. It had been over 50 years since the city has seen a new transit fleet. A customer service department has also been implemented and new route and schedule maps were created to disseminate information easily to the public.
There are other accomplishments that Montgomery Area Transit System has seen under the direction of Mr. Omick. Mr. Omick’s leadership will be surely missed, but the City of Montgomery says thank you to him, best wishes and good luck.
Mr. Miller has stated that he is excited about working at MATS and for the City of Montgomery community. He says he will continue with the efforts already established and have the system experience more growth. Mr. Miller comes to Montgomery from Albany, Georgia, where he was General Manager, and has over 20 years of transit system experience which includes, being a dispatcher as his first job in the field of public transportation to Assistant General Manager and General Manager positions.
In addition to his transit management experience at Albany Transit System in Albany, Georgia, he has had transit management experience at Tyler Transit System in Tyler, Texas, Lynchburg Transit Company in Lynchburg, Virginia, Merrimack Valley Area Transit Company in Haverhill, Massachusetts, Greater Roanoke Transit Company in Roanoke, Virginia and Blacksburg Transit System in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Mr. Miller has a Bachelors Degree in Business Management from Virginia Tech and is a member of numerous transit associations. The City of Montgomery welcomes Mr. Miller and looks forward to his leadership at MATS.
