Friends of Montgomery Clean City Commission, a program of the City of Montgomery’s Neighborhood Services Department, received a grant in the amount of $7,500 to purchase educational bin decals which will be placed on city-issued rollout containers. This project was funded by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management through a grant from the Alabama Recycling Fund.
The bin decals were designed to promote recycling efforts in which citizens are automatically participating just by throwing the proper materials in their garbage cans, while reducing contamination for the city’s materials recovery facility which is operated by RePower South. Colorful pictures and words show what does and does not go into the rollout containers. Neighborhood Services Director Amanda Miller explains, “Citizens learn that following simple guidelines with what they throw away improves the efficiency of the recycling process and the quality of the final product. The decals also encourage citizens to find locations to donate certain items, which will divert many things from our landfill.” Saving space in the landfill reduces pollution that is detrimental to our environment and our health.
Distribution plans for the decals are currently in the works, according to Miller. “We are pleased with the bin decals and look forward to educating our citizens on the sustainable solutions that are a reality when recyclables are collected by this single stream method.”
