Montgomery Urges Residents to Prepare for Hurricane Season

Post Date:July 23, 2025 4:00 PM

MONTGOMERY, AL — With Atlantic hurricane season continuing through Nov. 30, the City of Montgomery and the Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency are reminding residents to take proactive steps to stay safe and prepared.

“Making sure every resident has ways of staying protected is the city’s top priority,” Mayor Steven Reed said. “Citizens should follow proper safety protocols and stay connected through official city pages.”

Officials encourage residents to review their family emergency plans and stock up on essential items, including bottled water, nonperishable food, a first-aid kit, sanitation supplies, flashlights with extra batteries, and fully charged mobile devices. A backup power source, such as a generator, is also recommended.

The Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency emphasized the importance of acting early.

“Prepare now — don’t wait for a storm watch,” the agency said in a statement. “It’s best to stay alert and monitor conditions throughout the season.”

Residents are encouraged to sign up for city alerts through the City of Montgomery’s website at www.montgomeryal.gov and follow official city social media pages. Local weather sources, such as WSFA’s First Alert Weather Team, can also provide timely updates.

In the event of a severe storm or power outage, residents without access to a shelter are advised to take cover in a windowless bathroom, interior closet or hallway, or under a staircase.
