Montgomery, Ala. — The City of Montgomery is honoring the life and service of Corporal David M. Hathcock, a 20‑year veteran of the Montgomery Police Department, who passed away on February 22, 2026, from injuries sustained in an on‑duty vehicle collision that occurred on November 9, 2025. In tribute to his service, Mayor Steven L. Reed has ordered all city flags to be flown at half‑staff through Friday, February 27, 2026.
Corporal Hathcock devoted his career to protecting the citizens of Montgomery with professionalism, courage, and unwavering integrity. Over the course of two decades, he became known not only for his commitment to duty but also for the compassion he brought to the badge each day.
“Corporal David Hathcock represented the very best of Montgomery,” Mayor Reed said in a statement. “For two decades, he put on the uniform with courage and compassion, serving our residents with honor. His sacrifice is a solemn reminder of the risks our officers take every day to keep our city safe. Tamika and I are praying for Katie, his daughters, and the entire Hathcock family during this incredibly difficult time. Montgomery stands with you.”
Montgomery Police Chief James N. Graboys also reflected on the legacy Corporal Hathcock leaves behind. He noted that Hathcock’s influence extended far beyond his daily duties, shaping the department’s culture and impacting the careers of countless officers who had the privilege of learning from him.
“Corporal Hathcock wore the badge with courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to duty," Graboys said. "Throughout his career, he left an incredible legacy within this department, from the generations of officers he trained and mentored to the countless citizens he protected and served. The impact of his sacrifice for this city will continue to be felt for years to come.”
Beyond his service to the city, Hathcock was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Katie, and their two daughters, whom colleagues say were the center of his world. The city encourages residents to keep the Hathcock family, the Montgomery Police Department, and all who knew and loved him in their thoughts and prayers during this period of profound loss.
As Montgomery lowers its flags in his honor, the community stands united in gratitude and remembrance—reflecting on a life defined by service, integrity, and extraordinary dedication.
