The Alabama Law Enforcement Emergency Vehicle Operation Center is to provide Law Enforcement Officers with the necessary training to increase their safety on the roadways. It is crucial to provide first responders with the tools they need to protect not only themselves, but the public as well. This facility provides the necessary training to keep law enforcement officers safer within their vehicles by training them on how to operate a emergency vehicle during different situations they may encounter throughout their career.

Description of Classes

Emergency Vehicle Operator Course - We offer 8 hour and 16 hour courses that will explore the basic driving concepts necessary for safe operation of an emergency vehicle. It will include practical exercises to allow the officers time to understand these concepts from a hands-on experience.

High Center of Gravity Vehicles - We offer 8 hour and 16 hour courses that focus on the dynamics of High Center of Gravity Vehicles and will expose students to practical hands-on experience through a HCGV course designed to represent common issues faced during field operations.

Basic Academy Class - This 27 hour class offers students a basic understanding of driving concepts. It also provides the students with time to complete practical exercises in order to practice the concepts hands-on. A nighttime driving course is also provided. Open to basic academy classes only.

These courses will consist of one or more of the following areas:

  • Legal Issue Considerations: Students will explore legal issue considerations and liabilities. Students will discuss the legal ramifications associated with violations and negligence, whether intentional or not, and will look at how to avoid making such mistakes as they apply emergency vehicle driving techniques during field operations.

  • Non-Emergency Vehicle Operations: Students will learn basic driving techniques to consider while operating their vehicles in a non-emergency capacity. While these techniques are not limited to non-emergency situations only, the primary focus of this section of learning is to address the day-to-day normal operation, hazard avoidance and overall safety precautions which coincide with the so-called routine duty of driving. Common risk factors associated with driving, components of the defensive driver, and the wearing of the seat belt will specifically be addressed.

  • Emergency Vehicle Operations: Students will explore the aspects of emergency vehicle operations and will build upon the principles learned in the previous hour. This segment is designed to expose students to the hazards associated with clearing intersections, pursuit driving, and emergency response.

  • Vehicle Dynamics and Practical Exercises: Students will be exposed to the aspects of vehicle dynamics and the effects they have on the vehicle’s overall output and their relationship with the driver’s input. This segment will specifically address issues such as Newton’s laws of physics, steering, backing, front-end swing, rear wheel cheat, braking, acceleration, the effects of weight transfer, and skid avoidance. Also during this segment, students will participate in several practical exercises which will evaluate their ability to perform at a satisfactory level as students maneuver through specific objectives. These objectives are designed to present drivers with common obstacles in which they will most likely encounter during field operations.

  • HCGV Course Description: During this course, students will explore the aspects of vehicle dynamics and the effects they have on the vehicle’s overall output and their relationship with the driver’s input. This course will specifically address issues such as Newton’s laws of physics, steering, backing, front-end swing, rear wheel cheat, braking, acceleration, the effects of weight transfer, and skid avoidance when operating a High Center of Gravity Vehicle. Also during this course, students will participate in several practical exercises which will evaluate their ability to perform at a satisfactory level as they maneuver through specific objectives. These objectives are designed to present drivers with common obstacles which they will most likely encounter during field operations. This course will also explore the differences between operating a sedan as opposed to a High Center of Gravity Vehicle
