District 6
Oronde K. Mitchell is a native of historic Montgomery, Alabama, and a career public servant. He currently serves as the City Councilor for District 6 as well as a Hearing Officer for the Montgomery County Public School System. Mitchell began his journey as a community servant over a decade ago. His life and experiences led him to invest in the community by embarking upon several endeavors that provided resources, mentoring, and advocacy to the citizens of his city.
As a District Hearing Officer, Mitchell strives to provide consultation to struggling students, enforce the importance of quality education, and advocate for our youth. He provides resources, counseling, and inspiration to bridge the gaps in broken homes. He has proven to be a champion of student success by emphasizing attendance, mentoring, and school-based support. His current campaign, I Am Here, brings awareness to the services and outreach that MPS provides but he also stresses individual accountability for all faculty, staff, and administration for the well-being of MPS students.
As City Councilor for District 6, Mitchell has proven his dedication to his constituents and the citizens of Montgomery. Within his first term in office, Mitchell has been an action-oriented public official through his implementation of projects, advancement of his district, and accentuating the need for crime prevention and social awareness. Several of his initiatives have garnered city-wide support and outstanding recognition for their impacts on the lives of disenfranchised youth, specifically African-American males. Mitchell is now instituting Saturday Academy which will promote the state’s Reading Initiative and provide our youth with much-needed support.
This year, Mitchell sponsored a Health Care Fair in District 6 for Montgomery residents by partnering with Trenholm State Technical College and over 25 community, social, and civic organizations to bring attention to the necessity of monitoring your physical and mental health. He co-founded the MBL (Montgomery Youth Basketball League), provided scholarships for Montgomery County Public High School Students committed to attending HBCUs (2020-21), and established the GO PINK Wig Giveaway in honor of his late mother.
As a brother of Omega Psi Phi, his loyalty knows no bounds. If it is replacing the HVAC system within the fraternity house, giving annually to the scholarship funds provided by his fraternity, or working with his brothers by co-sponsoring events like Another Omega Give Back with the Capital City Ques; his love for the fraternity is impenetrable.
He has also supported local first responders, and sanitation workers during the COVID-19 pandemic via Meals and Financial Advocacy(2020-21), and Supporting Our Seniors (holiday gas vouchers for seniors of Montgomery’s District 6 2021). Within his first year in office, he initiated a 90-Day Crime Initiative for Regency Park and there was a 40% reduction due to his determination. These are just some of the activities that he has accomplished.
When Mitchell is not serving his civic duty to the community and our youth, he is broadening his professional career with EG Cummings Memorial Funeral Home. Mitchell is always finding ways to build a rapport with his community. He is the founder of the Men in Motion (2001) and Gentleman in Motion (2015) mentoring groups. He is a financial and active member of the Sigma Phi Graduate Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated; however, he is Gamma Sig for life.
Oronde K. Mitchell possesses over 20 years of public service and aids our youth with personal development, managing their emotions and self-esteem all traits that are essential for a boy to become a man. He was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama in the Brookview community. He is the middle child of his parents John Alfred Mitchell, Sr., and the late Mary P. Mitchell. He is a product of Robert E. Lee High School and later obtained both his Bachelor of Science and Master in Early Childhood Education from Alabama State University.
As he guides other community leaders and activists to join the charge of revitalizing the spirits and dreams of our residents, he remains a constant and tireless servant in the garden of humanity. -” You can't lead the people if you don't love the people. You can't save the people if you don't serve the people.” -Dr. Cornel West
