Community-Based Violence Intervention & Prevention Initiative

The City of Montgomery is implementing an Action Research Methodology to help reduce violent crime, specifically gun violence.

Action Research is an approach that focuses on solving real-world problems by:

Actively engaging with participants to identify issues.
Developing solutions.
Implementing changes.
Critically reflecting on the process.
Aiming to bring about positive change within a specific context.
Simultaneously generating knowledge through a cycle of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting.

It prioritizes collaboration between researchers and participants to achieve practical improvements in practice.

Action Research Cycle

Project Activities

An examination of the City’s violent crime through a public health lens (the Social Determinants of Health).

Expanding the capacity of the existing Office of Violence prevention (OVP) program by integrating hospital-linked interventions with its street-linked interventions.

Physical environment improvements.

Resident involvement (community engagement).

Counseling services to survivors and those at the highest risk.

Multilateral collaboration between government agencies, community organizations, and residents, which includes establishing a steering committee to promote and provide oversight of data collection.

Expected Outcomes

Expansion of evidence-based programs to reduce violent crimes that result in the loss of life.

A reduction of violent crimes that result in serious injury.

Increased community engagement for evidence-based programs.

Increases in collaboration between stakeholders.

Improved opportunities for community violence survivors.

Building capacity for community violence intervention programs in Montgomery.
