The City of Montgomery’s Planning Department is developing a city-wide Climate Action Plan. The plan will outline clear actions that the city and its partners can take to build a sustainable economy and ensure a resilient future for all Montgomery residents.

What is a Climate Action Plan?

Many human activities—such as driving gasoline-powered vehicles, heating buildings with natural gas, and using electricity generated from coal and gas plants—release greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere. These GHGs, including carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, trap heat and accelerate climate impacts. A Climate Action Plan (CAP) identifies major sources of GHG emissions and outlines targeted actions to reduce emissions and build a sustainable economy.

The City of Montgomery's CAP takes a systematic approach by analyzing major pollution sources and hazards in the area, engaging residents and stakeholders to develop solutions, and creating ambitious, yet achievable emission reduction strategies across major categories: Energy, Buildings, Transportation, Land Use, Waste, and Agriculture. A key feature of the CAP process is designing climate actions to directly benefit all residents.

Amid a changing climate, Montgomery residents may face increasingly severe weather events and costly climate impacts, including:

  • Higher energy bills
  • Increasing insurance premiums as insurers leave high-risk areas
  • Damage to local agriculture and fisheries and increased food costs
  • Expensive home repairs from weather damage

A CAP helps Montgomery take proactive steps to reduce future costs while building a more resilient community.
