Long Range Planning

The Long Range Planning Division (LRP) is responsible for comprehensive long and short range urban planning for the City of Montgomery. The Long Range Planning Division is responsible for updating and maintenance of the City Comprehensive Planning which is a physical plan for development and redevelopment of the city based on current and future needs of the city. Long Range Planning also applies for various grants for implementation of various projects recommended in plans.

Land Use Division

The Land Use Division is responsible for the daily operations of the Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Regulations and Historic Ordinance. We are also the staff for the Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, Historic Preservation Commission, and Architectural Review Board. Our Division is responsible for rezoning requests, development plan review, platting process, variances/special exceptions, historic property alterations, historic property designations, zoning verification requests, and zoning violation complaints.

Transportation Planning

The Transportation Planning Division is responsible for the daily operations of the transportation planning process for the Metropolitan Planning Organization and do overall transportation planning work in the areas of public transportation, roadway infrastructure creation and improvements, bicycles and pedestrians and safety. The Metropolitan Planning Organization covers portions of Montgomery, Elmore and Autauga Counties. The Transportation Planning Division plans for long and short range transportation improvements such as road and bridge construction, transit capital and operations (rail, water, and bus), bicycle, air transportation, pedestrian improvements and traffic safety improvements.

M Public Transit System

The M Public Transit System (formerly Montgomery Area Transit System (MATS) General Manager and the Assistant General Manager/ Maintenance Director are managed by the Department of Planning. All federal grant funding for the transit system is applied for and managed by the Planning Director and the transportation planning division. All issues and matters related to public transit and handled by the General Manger of Transit and coordinated with the Planning Director if needed.

These divisions work together to ensure the orderly use of land as it relates to enhancing and maintaining the economic, aesthetic, physical viability of the city.
