Montgomery Forward Initiative

Citywide investment revitalizing parks, fire stations, and community centers.

$50M Program
  • Citywide Investment: A $50 million program revitalizing parks, fire stations, and community centers across Montgomery.
  • Community Centers Reopened: Crump, Chisholm, and Sheridan Heights renovated and returned as neighborhood anchors.
  • New Facilities Delivered: Fire Station 10 and the Courtney Harman Pruitt Community Center added modern service capacity and community space.
  • Parks Upgrades: Lagoon Park improvements contributed to major tournament hosting and economic impact.

Building Maintenance

Facility reliability, rapid turnaround, and a shift toward proactive upkeep.

  • Rapid Response Excellence: Over 87% of 311 maintenance requests were completed within 7 days across all months in, consistently exceeding typical industry benchmarks.
  • Special Projects Delivered: Completed upgrades and renovations at key city facilities, including Paterson Field, City Hall, and HVAC systems.
  • Proactive Maintenance Culture Shift: Initiated a strategic shift from reactive to proactive maintenance, including outsourced HVAC preventive programs and facility condition assessments.

Community Development

Jobs access, housing partnerships, and place-based revitalization in West Montgomery.

  • Job Fair Success: Co-hosted a job fair with the Career Center of Alabama, attracting approximately 400 attendees.
  • Healthy Housing & Homelessness Initiatives: Formed partnerships with NYC Langone Hospital, the Virginia Resource Center, and the Reinvestment Fund to advance housing and homelessness services.
  • Parks with a Purpose: Identified a site on Oak Street in West Montgomery for a community garden and future park development along the historic Selma-to-Montgomery trail.

Economic Development

Small business wins, downtown projects, and riverfront activation.

  • Small Business Awards Celebration: Sold-out event at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts with 300+ attendees, honoring excellence across 11 categories.
  • Access Montgomery Hub Launched: CRM now tracks 300+ small business intakes, enabling real-time referrals and support.
  • Retail Growth: Three new downtown businesses opened, with additional growth expected following a successful retail analysis presentation.
  • Riverfront Activation: Design completed for the Riverfront Stage at the Silos, with construction bids expected soon.
  • Open on Main Street: Opened a Block by Block location and launched the “Open on Main Street” storefront grant program to activate vacant storefronts and strengthen walkability.

Engineering

Bridge safety, stormwater compliance, and workforce upskilling.

  • Bridge Safety Leadership: Inspected 48 of 161 city bridges, exceeding national consistency and deficiency benchmarks.
  • Fairview Avenue Project: Completed in November (project delivery milestone).
  • Stormwater & Floodplain Management: Strong enforcement of MS4 permits and steady progress toward FEMA’s Community Rating System (CRS) entry.

Fire/Rescue

New facilities, expanded EMS capacity, and community-centered transparency.

  • Fire Station 10 Opened: $19M facility with advanced equipment and the city’s first Safe Haven Baby Box.
  • Safe Haven Baby Box: Already used successfully, with multiple infants safely surrendered.
  • EMS Expansion: Deployed Rescue 87 (Station 2) and Rescue 86 (Station 14); upgraded Engine 7 and Engine 10 to ALS units; deployed Lifepak 35 heart monitors and trained personnel.
  • Training & Recruitment: 14 new firefighters graduated from a 24-week academy; expanded outreach via geofencing, military partnerships, and schools.
  • Leadership Development: Hosted seminars and tactical training.
  • Transparency & Engagement: Shared real-time emergency data via the Open Data Portal.
  • National Recognition: Multiple World Combat Challenge Championships for firefighter fitness.
  • Community Events: MDA Boot Drive ($48,493.48 raised), 9/11 Memorial, and 127th Anniversary celebration.

Fleet Management

Training, preventive maintenance, and system modernization to keep departments moving.

  • ASE Certification Achievement: One team member earned the ASE Master Mechanic Certification.
  • Parts Room Fully Staffed: Improved inventory control and reduced delays due to parts shortages.
  • Fire Apparatus PM Success: Strong preventive maintenance completion performance supporting the Montgomery Fire Rescue fleet.
  • Note: Weekend PM scheduling plans are operational, but 2026 “new” priorities are captured in More to Come when applicable.

Grants Department

Securing resources and strengthening programs that deliver direct community impact.

  • $2M DOJ Grant Secured: Awarded for the Community-Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative.
  • YouthBuild Montgomery: Launched program webpages and began renovating two homes for families in need.
  • Foster Grandparent Recognition: Received commendations from both the Mayor and Governor.

Inspections

Customer access improvements, proactive enforcement planning, and staff development.

  • Demolitions: Over 80 properties cleared, including the Governor’s House Hotel.
  • Process Improvement: Ordinance amended for temporary Certificates of Occupancy.

Office of Violence Prevention

Citywide effort driving safer neighborhoods through youth engagement, faith partnerships, and community healing.

  • Built a Strong Team: Fully staffed the Office to lead citywide violence-prevention efforts.
  • Launched a Movement: Introduced the Montgomery Stand Up Campaign to unite the community against violence.
  • Faith Community Mobilization: Engaged 60 churches to support prevention, healing, and neighborhood stabilization.
  • Youth-Focused Initiatives: Partnered with Montgomery Public Schools on programs to reduce incidents and promote positive engagement.
  • Juvenile Outreach: Prepared to begin mentorship and life-skills work at Mt. Meigs Juvenile Facility and with Montgomery County Youth Services.
  • Community Events: Hosted two major OVP-led events (Kickoff & Mental Health) and supported partner events like Day of Hope and VOCAL Christmas to expand collaboration.

Street Maintenance

Seasonal readiness, complaint reduction, and strong cross-department support.

  • 100% Completion of Seasonal Ditch Maintenance: Over 300 ditches and rights-of-way were cut three times during the growing season, with many receiving a fourth cut.
  • Vegetation Control Innovation: Launched a spraying program across 63 high-growth areas, significantly reducing vegetation-related complaints.

Traffic Engineering

Signal reliability upgrades, smart inspection tools, and energy-saving lighting work.

  • Intersection Upgrades Completed: All 12 targeted intersections received new cabinet/controller hardware, improving traffic signal reliability.
  • Drone Program Launched: Two employees certified as drone pilots; drones now actively used for inspections and planning.
  • LED Lighting Expansion: $100,000 in LED upgrades underway with projected $1,000/month utility savings; Garner Engineering onboard to manage interstate lighting assessments.

Office of Violence Prevention
  • Youth Reentry Support: Providing mentorship, life-skills training, and positive adult relationships for youth returning from detention to reduce reoffending.
  • School-Based Outreach: Expanding targeted programs in Montgomery Public Schools to engage high-risk youth early and interrupt pathways to violence.
  • Citywide Mobilization: Activating residents and partnering with 60 churches as trusted anchors for prevention, youth support, and community healing.
  • Youth-Led Initiatives: Elevating young voices through leadership opportunities, empowering them to design solutions and lead activities that create safer neighborhoods.
Inspections
  • Workflow Software: Implement new workflow software to strengthen throughput and accountability.
  • Code Enforcement: Expand code enforcement capacity and coverage.
Planning & Transportation
  • Branding & Revenue: Bus wraps, refreshed branding, and increased advertising revenue.
