Face Covering and Mask Ordinance FAQs

Posted July 7, 2020 - The Montgomery City Council passed an ordinance on July 7, 2020 that is effective immediately that requires face coverings or masks in public places in the City of Montgomery.

This ordinance codifies the requirement that started on June 19th under an executive order issued by Mayor Reed and expands on the order by requiring businesses to be community partners in the effort to slow the spread of the virus. Additionally, the ordinance outlines measures to ensure adequate social distancing at businesses, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and other establishments and activities.

This ordinance contains relatively minor requirements that are justified in order to protect public health. Government regularly requires reasonable safety measures such as seat belts, stop signs and speed limits in order to keep people safe.
